There are many places to travel over Memorial Day and from the time I was a kid I have gone to many. Having moved to Virginia, one of our favorite places to go for the long weekend is Ocracoke Island, NC. It is an easy drive, if you leave at the right time. The draw back now is what used to be a short ferry ride from Hatteras now takes an hour and 20 minutes (approximately). A few years ago a Hurricane came through and the channel that the ferry followed filled with sand and a new route was established.
Why Ocracoke? It is a very dog friendly island. It is easy to find a rental that allows dogs. It is small enough that you can park your car and walk or bike anywhere you want on the island. There are great restaurants, wine shops, and friendly local people. It is a very relaxing beautiful place to visit.
Journal entry Saturday May 25, 2013:
Up and out to walk/ run. John, Liza and Charlie out for a run. Mick, Fi’ and me out to walk. Mick will NOT be going tomorrow! Chilly this morning. Back from run/walk and a lively basketball shooting contest ensued. Liza won. Evidently watching me shoot is $20 worth of entertainment. (I don’t get it!)
Showered and off to shop and have lunch. A little chilly with the wind. Liza and I both sweater and hoodies. First stop Zillie’s Island Pantry (wine shop and one of our favorite spots) for a drink. On to a couple of shops and I got a shirt for my friend Madeleine for her birthday. Next stop Jolly Roger’s for a drink. Stopped at another shop and I got my friend Sherry’s birthday gift and got myself two etched crab wine glasses. Off to Howard’s Pub for lunch. John-oyster sandwich, Liza and I-clam strips, Charlie-BBQ. All meals were very good. Back to house for naps. *boys already napped on the sundeck at Howard’s Pub.
I woke up at 6:10. I had napped through the night. Went out in the living room and John is asleep on the couch. I could not believe that he had slept on the couch-in his clothes-all night. I got my iPad out and played a game. When John woke up I asked him why hadn’t come to bed. He told me it was only 6:30.
Me “Yes, 6:30 Sunday morning!”
John “No it is Saturday evening.”
Convinced that I am right I check my iPad for the time…..6:30 PM! I was ELATED! I had way more vacation left than I thought!
Stay tuned for future journal entries telling about the adventure Liza and Charlie had while I was napping. (I thought they were in their bedroom still asleep).
